The CBRT has banknote depots in 16 of Turkey’s provinces where it does not have branches, serving to improve the physical quality of banknotes in circulation and meet the markets’ need for different denominations of banknotes in a timely manner. Through these depots, TRY 74.9 billion worth of collections and TRY 96.1 billion worth of payments were made in 2020. In other words, 13.7% of the CBRT’s total cash transaction volume was performed via these depots last year.

Additionally, five new MONY depots started operating in 2020: two in Istanbul, one in Ankara, and two in Izmir. Thus, the total number of MONY depots reached 26 by the end of 2020. In Istanbul, the share of transactions by MONY depots within the total transactions was 30.5%.

Lastly, to enhance efficiency of coin cash management, Consignment Coin Depots (CCD) were established in various provinces as per the protocol signed between the Postal and Telegraph Corporation (PTT) and the CBRT. In 2020, one new CCD was opened in Samsun, increasing the total number of CCDs in Turkey to 13. In 2020, 71% of the country-wide coin transaction volume of TRY 1,221.7 million was made by CCDs.

The Annual Average Value of Banknotes in Circulation/GDP ratio, which was 3.5% in 2009, has changed over the years and stood at 3.9% in 2020 (Chart 2.6.4).
